What is Salsa?

Salsa is one of the hottest and fastest growing club dances today with established followings in many parts of the world from Europe to America, and becoming increasingly popular in Asia.

Salsa is in fact, the name given to a type of music that has it roots in Afro-Latin beats. The dance form that accompanies this music is commonly called salsa and is a distillation of many Latin and Afro-Caribbean dances.

Salsa dance incorporates multiple styles and variations, and is often danced in couples. The multitude of turn patters and fancy footwork makes the dance unique, upbeat and spontaneous.

What is Rueda?

Salsa Casino Rueda is a form of salsa dance. In short, the dance is called Rueda. Rueda means wheel or circle so Rueda translates to salsa dancing done by a group in a circle, with partners being passed around in response to a caller’s commands. What makes Rueda a unique and joyful spectacle is how the “followers” are able to dance in a synchronous manner, to a series of moves called by the “leader”, sometimes in quick succession, all done to the lively, up-beat salsa music. Salsa Casino Rueda originated in the late 1950s and was made popular by the Cubans.

What do I learn at the salsa beginner classes?

You do not need to have any dance background to join our beginner classes. These classes teach basic salsa footwork, the right turn, cross-body-lead/turn, basic lead and follow techniques, hand changes, and fundamental partnerwork.

What do the salsa intermediate level classes teach?

Intermediate level classes are progressive and teach more fancy footwork, intricate hand changes and turn patterns. The focus will be on continuity in leading and following a series of moves, as well as shines & styling. These are 1.5 hour classes where the first half hour will be spent on warm-up and shines. The subsequent hour will teach partner work.

What is the prerequisite for Rueda classes?

Rueda 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 are progressive salsa casino rueda classes teaching basic, intermediate and advance rueda moves. You will need to have completed intermediate 2 level salsa (about equivalent to 30 hrs of salsa classes) to join the Rueda 1 classes. The prerequisites for Rueda 2, 3, 4 & 5 are Rueda 1, 2, 3 & 4 respectively.

What style of salsa is taught?

We teach the cross-body-lead style (commonly known as LA style) and occasionally add in a little Cuban style! And of course, Rueda classes are all Cuban style salsa.

Do I have to sign up with a partner for the salsa class?

It is not necessary to bring a partner. However, if you have a partner or friend you would like to sign up with, you are most welcomed to register him/her. We rotate partners in our classes so you will get a chance to dance with everyone, and to lead/follow different partners for more effective & fun learning.

In some instances when there are too many ladies signed up for a class, we will only confirm registrations from guys or couples; ladies signing up without a partner may be waitlisted.

What if I miss a salsa class? Can I attend a make-up lesson?

If you miss a salsa class, you can attend a same level or lower level salsa class that is concurrently running, as make up. Make-up lessons need to be attended within 2 months from the original missed date. Fees will not be refunded for missed classes.

No make up lessons are offered for non-salsa and the Understanding Salsa Rhythms classes.

What if I am not ready to move up to the next level of classes?

Please talk to us. Should you not be ready to move to the next level, you may consider retaking a level that you’ve completed. That way, you get a chance to refresh and practice before moving up the next level (repeats for salsa courses enjoy a special fee of $65 per course. This discount is only entitled to those retaking salsa beg, int 1, int 1.5, int 2, int 3, int 4, int/adv , or rueda classes within a 6-month period. Not valid for workshops).

How soon can I hit the dance floor?

We’d always encourage our students to go to the dance floor after their 3rd beginner class. The earlier one starts, the sooner one learns to better understand and grasp leading & following techniques, and also to build confidence. The key is to relax, have fun, and enjoy the music and dance!
